Breaking Backwards
A shattered woman falling in reverse Picking up pieces
Trembling hands & calloused fingertips Dark hair floating through the sky
Like driftwood cutting through the still waters
Feeling invincible
Only a summer sun can match that shine Nights grow shorter
It's still cold alone, shadows never offered much company
Pillows don't make you feel safe
Sheets & blankets don't reach for your hand in the mornings
Tears flood this room some nights
Dew is all that's left by sunrise
Only Harvest moons can match that shine
You're the book I didn't finish because I didn't want it to end
You're the song I couldn't sing because I couldn't learn the bridge
I'm the bird you didn't cage because you believed my wings were too big
I'm the place you can't get to because you threw away the map
You're the words I'll never get to say
I'm forever destined to be the one that got away
